In wake of several anti-Semitic attacks, Jews of West Rogers Park hired off-duty Chicago police to patrol neighborhood on Shabbat.
In the wake of a series of anti-Semitic incidents and threats, members of the Chicago Jewish community in the United States have hired a private security force.
According to DNAinfo, Jewish families in West Rogers Park have hired off-duty Chicago police officers to patrol the neighborhood on Shabbat and holidays when they are unable to drive and use their cell phones.
West Rogers Park resident David Kamish organized the patrols, collecting $25 a month from over 25 families to pay the off-duty copy.
Kamish said the project's budget is currently $800 a month, and all funds go to pay for the security service of the off-duty officers assigned to the Rogers Park Police District.
"The police officers are grossly underpaid and certainly under-appreciated," Kamish said. "And we just want to continue working with them and being appreciative of their efforts whether it be off duty or on duty."
The need for extra security is certainly not exaggerated as the Chicago Jewish community has experienced in recent weeks both an armed robbery as well as threats to synagogues and other Jewish institutions.

Given Chicago's financial situation, in a few years other neighborhoods may have to hire private security.
Has anyone investigated the DNC's part in this?
My advice: just leave and move to a place where you and your faith is respected. But leave the liberalism that poisoned your current fields behind.
An $800.00 monthly budget wont buy much off duty police coverage.
You hire one
This is the neighborhood I grew up in. It was the most Jewish neighborhood in the city, and it was a great neighborhood, no crime at all. But the old neighborhood has changed quite a bit in the last 20-30 years, and not for the better. Sigh. . . .
I will bet one hundred and eleventy billion dollars that every single perp in this voted for Hussein.
"It was brought to our attention there was a group of citizens in the area that don't feel the police are serving the community the best we can," said Sgt. Shawn Sisk, who leads the district's community policing office. "We can't stop that from happening; however, we're not going to support it. We dont want that to send a false sense of security to the neighborhood."
That seems to be an admission the neighborhood, a low crime middle class, isn't safe, and that there's nothing the police can do to correct the situation.
That said, most Jewish institutions in the area have security, this is a bit unusual only in that it seems to be for the neighborhood.
Patrol yourselves. Underpaid, unappreciated hired guards can pick up extra pay by looking the other way at the right time for the right price. Remember Abraham Shapiro (Petah Tikva, early 20th century) and follow his example.
