Last month a brilliant Amy Schumer sketch came up with a perfect, darkly comic phrase to describe the Hollywood phenomenon of beautiful actresses being put out to pasture after they're deemed too old: "Last F-able Day." Julia Louis-Dreyfuss explained it this way: "In every actress' life, the media decides when you finally reach the point where you're not believably f-able any more."
In the skit, Tina Fey says, "Nobody really overtly tells you, but there are signs." But someone in Hollywood decided to be very upfront with Maggie Gyllenhaal that, essentially, her day has passed. Gyllenhaal didn't name names but she told The Wrap, "Im 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55. It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh."
Hollywood's sexism and penchant for opening up "a hot can of 22" aren't anything new. But lately, there's been a lot of open discussion about all the ways big and small that the industry screws over women. This week, ladies called out Cannes' fashion policing BS, last year ladies who were afraid to out Cosby as a sexual predator for decades finally came forward, this month the ACLU alleged that Hollywood discriminates against female directors and actresses like Gyllenhaal are increasingly speaking up about double standards that deem a woman past her expiration date at 37 while a man at 55 isn't. Or as Fey said about men in the Schumer skit "They're f-able forever. They could be a hundred and, like,"here she makes an obscene gesture"nothing but white spiders coming out but they're f-able."
Gyllenhaal says despite the sexism, she is choosing to look on the bright side: "A lot of actresses are doing incredible work right now, playing real women, complicated women. I dont feel despairing at all. And Im more looking with hope for something fascinating." And for what it's worth, we'd like to point out that sex symbol Mae West made her big screen debut when she was even older than Gyllenhaal.
I’d hit it.
Oh yeah. I wrote her off when she opened her mouth one year at the Tribeca FF. Can't even remember what she said to qualify her as a full-on, non-thinking moon bat.
Hollywood wants them younger and younger. I recall Salma Hyack complaining about the lack of roles for older women when she hit 40.
OTOH, Pierce Brosnan doesn't seem to have a problem making movies with the likes of Trine Dyrholm or even (another knee jerk leftist) Emma Thompson.
She was never really a Hollywood beauty to start with. Plenty of actresses her age work all the time. Actresses that get by on sexy but are tough to get along with disappear real fast when their looks start to fade. Ask Meg Ryan or Demi Moore.
Who?
Well, I’ve heard it said that the love interest in movies is generally in her 20s.
It doesn’t matter how old the man involved is. If the main character man is in his 20s, the love interest is his own age.
If the man is 30 something or 40 something, or even 50 something, the love interest is still in her 20s.
How do liberal Hollywood feminist types live with themselves being in an industry with such terrible sexist standards??? Just wondering.
To paraphrase the idiot who confronted the worker at Chick Fill A over how can she work for a company with such terrible values and live with herself, how do these liberal Hollywood females live with themselves, being part of such a discriminatory entertainment industry?
Off topic perhaps, but I am acquainted with many 40 and 50 something women who look and dress and behave in an attractive manner. I believe that Hollywood could have roles for older women, and still have them be the love interest or otherwise attractive to men.
She should take a clue from Angelina Jolie and start her own production company. If she doesn’t have the money, then get together with other aging ladies. There are plenty of books with story lines of ‘older’ women in the lead that would make good movies or tv series.
Let's hear about her brother, Jake.
A good example of this is Sarah Palin, who is (are you ready?) 51 years old.
Jake is a left-wing sissy. If he ever had to look into the eyes of a real man, he’d wet himself.
Lucky for him, I’m not a real man.
:)
I wouldn’t want Maggie in a move, just because she’s homely as hell.
Very short opportunity for her to look good, even with Hollywood help, and then a breakout role in softcore porn. She only got in the business at all from family ties.
Best thing to say about MG is that she hasn’t disfigured herself to try to look younger. Outside of Hollywood, she’d be a respectable 37-year old wife and mom.
I'm guessing that would be the cash-cow demo for the movie industry. Well, that and kids movies.
So, in effect, these "artistes" are saying the public doesn't know a thing about "art"?
Came across an IMDB comment about a recent movie on IFC (iirc): "What do you do when you can't get a decent part to help separate you from all the other role-bereft actresses? Well, you write one for yourself of course."
Nothing to stop MG from producing/writing/starring in/directing her own film.
If the actor is Kevin Spacey, she’s also probably the wrong sex ...
Only the one's who can play only a slut or are eye candy alone have this problem.
Women in Hollywood who can act always have a job.
Kevin’s happy trolling London gardens for his new rent boys, according to the UK tabloids (alledgedly of course)
Best lines I’ve read today.
The Hollywood that discriminates against women is all liberal Democrat all the time. It’s hard to think of another industry that could get away treating women the way Hollywood does. Yet, as you point out, the women are liberal Democrats too. So I have a problem getting worked up about their problem.
