Obama wins trade victory in the Senate

President Obama won a big victory for his trade agenda Friday with the Senate’s approval of fast-track legislation that could make it easier for him to complete a wide-ranging trade deal that would include 11 Pacific Rim nations.

A coalition of nearly 50 Senate Republicans and more than 10 Democrats voted for Trade Promotion Authority late Friday, sending the legislation to the House for a difficult fight as Obama faces more entrenched opposition from Democrats.

The Senate coalition fought off several attempts by opponents to undermine the legislation, defeating amendments that were politically popular but potentially poisonous to Obama’s bid to secure the trade deal.

“This is an important bill, likely the most important bill we will pass this year. It’s important to President Obama,” Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and primary author of the bill, said at the close of debate.

Too true; in twenty years Obama will be remembered as the president who saved the economy, the planet, blah blah blah (all things with no clear performance metrics). Only those who lived through this will know the truth: He is a miserable failure completely unqualified for the job. Just as I always connect BJ Clinton to Monica Lewinsky and the Paula Jones sexual harassment lawsuit; I’ll always connect Obama to Ferguson/Baltimore, a horrible economy, and the surrender of the Middle East to radical Islam.

How have you guys been, by the way? Yesterday I bought a shoulder holster for my CZ-82 (made in the former Czechoslovakia) on Ebay. One click, and PayPal handled it through my checking account at TCF Bank in the United States. The holster is being shipped from Lithuania via the United States Postal Service, according to the tracking (!) number . . . although there's probably a third party involved, there.

I fire 9x18 FMJ made by Prvi Partizan of Serbia that I purchase online from AIM Surplus of Texas (where I also got the CZ-82). All shipped to my front door in Michigan.

My understanding is that you can open carry in Michigan, but for concealed, you need the license. I’m not doing either, yet.

The next time you step up to spew your CoC BS, you ought to have your facts straight: The balance of trade with Mexico went from a $1.6bil surplus for the US in 1993, to a $60+bil deficit for the US in 2014. In 2007 it was $74bil. Over the 20 years of NAFTA over $1trillion dollars have been transferred to Mexico...and now they are suing the USA at the WTO to force us to stop labeling our fresh meat with country of origin. They say it's unfair. Please explain to all of us has this has benefitted the US, it's workers and the preservation of our Capital Stock. You know what Capital Stock is, right?

Perotistas said the sucking sound would be jobs going to Mexico. That did not happen. The Democrats war on business that has been going on for a hundred years is the root of our problems here, not free trade. Scale back government and regulations and we can compete with anyone. While it's true that China may be able to produce a toaster cheaper than we can, we'll make it up in high-end products and services, IF our government gets out of the way, as Reagan said.

Perotistas also like to quote trade in material goods as evidence against free trade, but actually balance of payments is more accurate. In any case, my trade balance with the manufacturing facility where I work runs 100% in my favor in terms of cash exchange. Does that mean they should fire me?
