“A rock crushed my windshield, directly in front of my face, while I was driving on a major freeway. It was a terrifying experience and I am grateful that I did not lose control of the car. There was glass everywhere and I was covered in shards. I could not see out of driver’s side of the window but did manage to see well enough on the passenger’s side to pull the car to a safe area....”

Your experience was vastly more terrifying than anything the engineer encountered prior to the derailing. Why the hell didn’t YOU immediately double your speed?
I wasn’t conducting a train.
I am willing to wait for the investigation results.
I will say that I was completely rattled. I am grateful that I was calm enough to safely get the car off the road. Even thinking about it now gets the heart pumping.
Instinct would tell anyone in that situation ( if ? It did happen, as they are bull crapping us ) would be to slow down and get off the road as quick and safely as possible, not speed up.
