U.S. commandos mounted a rare raid into eastern Syria overnight, killing a senior Islamic State commander in a firefight, capturing his wife and rescuing a Yazidi woman held as a slave, the Pentagon said Saturday.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced the raid, identifying the militant as Abu Sayyaf. He said no U.S. forces were killed or injured in the operation.
A U.S.-led coalition has been striking Islamic State militants in Syria since last year, but this is only the second time troops have carried out a ground raid. A previous operation was aimed at rescuing Americans held hostage by the group.
Syrian state media earlier reported that Syrian government forces killed at least 40 IS fighters, including a senior commander in charge of oil fields, in an attack Saturday on the country's largest oil field - held by IS.
It identified the commander as Abu al-Teem al-Saudi. The name indicates he was a Saudi citizen.

You are the one who claims we can trust some Muslims.
Own it.
Maybe you’re right, but I don’t think so and I don’t think history supports your view.
So? They got Americans to do their dirty work for them again. Another example. Where were the other Muslim nations? Why didn’t they come to Kuwait’s aid?
Answer: They didn’t have to. They got us to do the dirty work for them as per usual.
“So? They got Americans to do their dirty work for them again. Another example. Where were the other Muslim nations? Why didnt they come to Kuwaits aid?”
Egyptian troops, an armored division, were the largest number that joined us, second only to ours. They took on some Iraqi republican guard armored brigades IN CENTRAL KUWAIT. Thousands of Iraqi tank and artillery crews and infantry surrendered to them.
From your ancestral land, Syria, there were armor and infantry that stayed within the Saudi border with Kuwait for guard duty or in reserve.
A Saudi armored column advanced with our Marine Expeditionary Force on the eastern flank and eventually liberated Kuwait City.
Your repetitive nonsense is appalling. Go brush up on recent history, historian!
Why then did they need us to liberate Kuwait? The truth is we did most of it and they expect us to.
Also, why is Turkey, our great ally, being so helpful now supporting ISIS?
The truth that you don’t want to admit is that there are no true Muslim allies there. They would turn on us in an instant if it so pleased them to do so. And it often does.
Why are you so all-fired willing to run over there and fight their battles for them every time they snap their fingers ... or rather send our young people over there to fight their battles for them?
I just don’t get that. And also, for what? What is the damned objective?
The way I see it we are saving some Muslims from other Muslims which could go on to infinity as they have been fighting each other for over 1000 years. Why do we need to be part of that?
A fact which seems to have escaped this thread is that Abu Sayyaf was a member of a terrorist organization. If he was just some dumbass sitting in the sand eating kebabs, I doubt Delta force would be interested in him.
Makes perfect sense now.
