“Hitlers guard squad was filled with homos.”
Yes, the SA was notoriously full of homosexuals, probably due to the influence of its leader, Ernst Rohm. However, the SA, even though it did function as Hitler’s “bodyguards”, was much more than a “guard squad”. They were around before Hitler even joined the party, and they were the street muscle of the NSDAP in their battles with Communists.
Once Hitler became chancellor, he arranged to kill their leaders and disbanded the SA because he didn’t trust Rohm, or the SA who were more loyal to Rohm than to Hitler. So he replaced them with the SS, who were loyal only to him.
It’s kind of a reach to base an argument on those facts that the Nazis in general had a favorable attitude towards the homos. Some did, for certain, but those guys for the most part were purged by Hitler, who ultimately defined the ideology of the party. Some homos who were in Hitler’s graces avoided that fate though, but I think that was the exception rather than the rule.
Now Hitler himself and his weird sexual issues could be a whole other thread...
Which were called the Brown Shirts IIRC.
Part of the reason was because the other big mucky mucks that came into power with Hitler wanted them gone.
Yes, this is fodder for another thread, thanks for your input.
Point of correction: no, he did not disband the SA, though its influence declined in relation to the SS. First Viktor Lutze and then Wilhelm Schepmann led the SA after Rohm's death and Hitler himself held the title of Oberster SA-Fuhrer, or "Supreme SA Leader", from 1930 until his death. There was even an armored corps made up of SA recruits in 1944-45.
As for homosexuality, biographer and Hitler authority Ian Kershaw notes that the homosexuality of Rohm and other senior SA leaders was known and tolerated by Hitler for many years.
