WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today filed an amendment to the Trade Act of 2015 to lock in assurances that this legislation cannot be used to change federal immigration law.
"The Obama Administration has repeatedly assured Members of Congress that there is nothing in the Trade Act of 2015 that would allow the President to unilaterally make changes to federal immigration laws. I agree, and we should put it in writing and make it binding law," said Sen. Cruz. "I am a strong supporter of free trade, but I cannot support legislation that would allow the President to once again circumvent Congress to enact his own immigration laws. Since the Obama Administration has emphatically argued that TPA will not affect immigration, it should support this amendment, which makes that promise explicit."
The amendment states that nothing in the Trade Act of 2015 or in any trade agreement subject to the Act "shall alter or affect any law, regulation, or policy relating to immigration."
The amendment also states that any fast-track procedures shall not apply to any implementing bill submitted with respect to a trade agreement "that includes any provision that alters or affects any law, regulation, or policy relating to immigration."
The text of the bill is available here.
Not effective? The guy won 5 of 9 Supreme Court cases!
But that’s okay- he’s not your guy. I’m sure you have, or will find, someone who represents your views. Good luck.
He’s a great lawyer, no argument, but he hasn’t been too successful in the Senate. I’ve been looking at Perry, and now Walker.
What conservative Senator has been successful....it’s like spitting into a tornado
You need to be able to coalition build and outflank your opposition, that’s pretty primary as a skill set for president. He’s a brilliant and talented guy, just not in that way.
I've got an agenda, and so do many others. We'll keep volunteering and sending real money to the Cruz campaign.
I know who I want to vote for and I'm not ashamed of having an agenda to make sure he's the last man standing.

We live in DIFFERENT times....until there’s another 9/11...I doubt there will be a “coalition”
An amendment like this is needed. Because as it stands now it's the worse bill ever. And what about the UN overriding of U.S gun laws and the empowering Obama giving him fast track authority on trade. I think Congress and the people should vote on any trade deal and it should not be handled soley by an anti-American communist dictator named Obama’
Once again, Senator Cruz is carrying the fight to Mr. Obama.
Anti Terrorists and Securty Moms and Dads need to support Senator Cruz.

All I know is that there have been a number of times (fast track is just the latest example) when a broad consensus of voters runs starkly contrary to the way their elected representatives are voting. There’s grassroots aplenty, all that is needed is leadership.
Take care, jrandom :)
I have a ton of admiration for Gov. Perry. After that debate mess- up, many would have slipped into the background. But clearly, he doesn’t want that to be his legacy. He wants to prove himself, at least, to himself. That takes great courage.
I think he’s mishandled. The guy has a great asset, he looks like a President. But, they have him wearing those old guy eyeglasses, and trying to mimic Cruz, speaking outside the podium.
IMO, Gov. Perry should stand in command behind the podium, and the audience should be able to meet his eyes.

You Don’t Mess Around with Ted.
His real legacy is to try to get my teen daughters to take a vaccination for an STD. No thanks. He's a fricking liberal. I lived it.

I wrote that above passage. it's good to have an amendment like that than the original bill but even better to kill it altogether. It's the worst bill ever.
I think he’s probably exactly who we need in our corner on the international stage. The public might be about sick of tedious PC b.s., gay EVERYTHING, and failure to launch on any initiative backed by the voters, providing an opening for a guy who reliably gets the job done.
I appreciate the stands he too against gop-e, even though fruitless, especially so. Each time I hear him I am more impressed.
Man, I can’t believe I messed that up! Thanks for the edit.
Well, I’m going to look askance at someone with the access and power he has that, well darn it, seems to never get the job done.
