But didnt ISIS say cyber attack? A cyber attack on the systems which control things like, say, train switching, would be a cyber attack, but with physical world impact.

Right. This is what I think it was. It’s not the 2 p.m. Monday “message” attack threatened last Saturday.
To: PapaBear3625
Possibly, but that wouldn’t create a crater.

Earlier in the thread it was reported that the engine car had no damage other than the windshield was cracked.
Someone dropping something from an overhead pass and cracking the windshield COULD make the engineer hit the brakes.

There is a report of a crater. There is only a 'rumor' based on third party info about the crater. It has not been 'reported' anywhere else.
What has been reported is that the engine had a cracked windshield, but otherwise very little damage.
AND, a SEPTA train had something crash through it's windshield mere minutes before this crash.

Yes, I should have emphasized “unconfirmed” report of a crater.
Let’s see where the data leads.

Is there any incident that would trigger an automatic throwing of breaks without human intervention ?

AND, a SEPTA train had something crash through it's windshield mere minutes before this crash. Having ridden SEPTA trains for decades in and around Philadelphia, I can say that it's not that unusual for local kids to toss rocks at passing trains. It always sounds very loud, but is relatively harmless except for putting lots of dents in the sides of the rail cars.

Is there any incident that would trigger an automatic throwing of breaks without human intervention ?I do not know. I would not think that something hitting the windshield would 'trigger' the brakes.
What will be interesting is when the interview of the engineer is made public.

(OOPS)
I would not think that something hitting the windshield would NOT ‘trigger’ the brakes.

What if it hit the engine’s windshield ? Might that cause the engineer to slam on the brakes ?

His interview and the black boxes will be very enlightening. Were there any cameras on train or in vicinity?

Sorry, I worded it correctly the first time, and made it worse the second.
Hopefully you parsed what I meant.

So... if you were driving your car and suddenly something hit your windshield and cracked it badly, what would be your immediate reaction ? Would you not hit the brakes ?

So... if you were driving your car and suddenly something hit your windshield and cracked it badly, what would be your immediate reaction ? Would you not hit the brakes ? A car is not a train, and I'm not a professional driver. Just saying that in my experience, it wasn't unusual for rocks and things to hit the trains I've been on... never has it resulted in sudden (or any) braking.
But, we're really going deep into speculation territory here with this... too many other more likely scenarios are possible... with human error usually being at the top of the list.
