In a private e-mail exchange with a concerned parent, Republican state legislator Josh Byrnes of Iowa said there is nothing worse than homeschool parents making their views known on public school policy. People who home school their children, people who private school their children, are STILL BEING TAXED to pay for government schools. They're paying; they get to say how their money will be spent.

Not only that. They are citizens — to whom the elected are supposed to accountable.

(The above is not a statement of fact. It is either satire or opinion. Or both.)

These same people don’t think ANY taxpayers should have ANY say in what the government does with their money.

We send our son, and eventually our young daughters, to a private Catholic school. Because he is autistic we are required to go through the public school system in which we live to have an IEP written. The private school is in a different school system than the one in which we live; therefore, the entire process had to start in that public school system. It is ridiculous! Each public school system would get from the state $22,500/year for my son's autistic diagnosis. Our private school manages to do it for the same amount they charge every other parent, $2100/year. Gov. Kasich did sign into law the Peterson Scholarship, which means any special education student can take their tax dollars, up to $20K, and use it to go to a private school that accepts Peterson grants. The local districts here are furious because all of that special education money is going to private schools who are doing a much better job of not only educations students properly, but being excellent stewards of the tax money.

They are also, presumably, still voting for people who are expected to represent them.
And they are likely turning out better “citizens” than a good number of those in public schools.

The truth is that homeschoolers are often those who are most in touch with public-school issues... and that’s why they’re homeschoolers, after all.
