My wife makes soap as a small home-based business. She works hard at this and enjoys it.

Most of her soaps are "girly" smelling. Lavender, Pear, and so forth. They are very pretty, and they are unique. She has a few loyal clients and does some craft shows.

To be honest, she makes just enough to offset her expenses. It's more of a hobby-business, but she's recently expanded to internet sales.

The tax laws, the regulation, the permits and licenses... it's too much. This will put the end to her dream. I'm certain of it. She's pretty fed up already.

I hear you about the overregulation of small business. I used a home-business soap for many years, but the owner eventually searched for someone to take over their line, and stressed that the concentrated botanicals used in cooking the soap formulas can be overpowering to someone with allergies.

It's ironic, too, that the first female millionaire in America was Madame C.J. Walker, who was also African-American and the daughter of former slaves. She started in her kitchen making her own hair and skin care formulas.
