Well I am torn on it.

She did SOMETHING. A Scared Straight approach can have an impact on a kid if you get them before it’s too late. So while using the cops yes, but if it has an impact it may really pay for itself for society down the road.

It’s basically all she knows to do, and given her no husband, probably all she can do to get the damn kid to listen. Moms are not dads and boys need a male role model who isn’t going to take their crap and get their heads on straight. fearfully and painfully if necessary.

This went down very fortunately. Most often the cops show, find the older son is wanted on some outstanding warrants, the dog gets shot, flash bangs go off, Social Services then shows up and takes the kids.

Cops are not family counselors, therapists, or such. Calling them usually makes matters a whole lot worse. This mom is lucky and the cops deserve a real patience award.
