The root problem with having an Article V convention is the ignorance and corruption of the American people themselves...I run across this opinion a lot at this site, and it is only logical for me to assume that you believe the American people are no longer capable of self-government. If that is so, I see only three possible solutions, and they only open up more questions.
- Solution #1: A king and a theocracy. Who shall be our royal family? Kennedy? Clinton? Rockefeller? Bush? What shall be our state religion? Catholicism, Mormonism, some branch of the Baptist or Methodist faith? Shall we tolerate other faiths, or shall we require the conversion of all Americans to the state faith?
- Solution #2: A military dictatorship. How to we handle the succession, the thing that made the Roman Empire such a violent mess in its internal affairs? Do we make it permanent, or do we set a time limit so that it can re-educate all Americans to one set of civic beliefs before allowing self-government? After the military restores self-government, if it actually does so, does the military assume a role similar to the Turkish army, where it reserves the right to come out of the barracks when a line has been crossed?
- Solution #3: The dissolution of the Union. Thanks to the Civil War precedent, could we make this happen without killing 75% of our population through war, starvation and disease? How would we defend our territory from Russia, which would happily take back Alaska, China, which would easily take Hawaii in a 3-day weekend, and Mexico, which would annex the whole American Southwest? How would we prevent internal war between the five or so nations that would devolve from dissolution?
I understand where you are coming from, but I think you have not considered all the possibilities if an Amendment Convention isn't held to prevent us from going over the cliff. What reasonable solutions do you see before we descend into violence and civil war?

You’ll note the constant drumbeat of how stupid are the American people, how ignorant they are, how corrupt they are...
Usually when these types of comments appear, it means learning and illuminating has been kicked to the curb. It’s revealing.

How about a 4th option? Education?
Our country is in the state it is in because we stopped believing in America and teaching and preserving self-government.
The reason the USA is no longer capable of self-government is because we stopped teaching and maintaining the ideals of our country's founding.
The only solution is to correct that mistake.
