Freddie Gray's death ruled a homicide, police officers charged

Prosecutors ruled that Freddie Gray's death was a homicide. Friday morning, State attorney Marilyn Mosby announced that all six officers involved in the incident have been charged and warrants are out for their arrests.

"Six officers are each facing multiple charges, including manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment: Lt. Brian Rice, Sgt. Alicia White, Officer William Porter, Officer Garrett Miller, Officer Edward Nero and Officer Caesar Goodson," The Baltimore Sun reports. "Goodson, who drove the van, has been charged with second-degree murder."

Mosby described how police arrested Gray on no grounds, violated police procedures by cuffing his hands and legs the van without putting him in a seat belt, and repeatedly failed to provide him with medical attention.

On April 12, Gray was arrested for carrying a knife and his spine was somehow partially severed while in police custody.

Mosby said that the knife was legal and that the officers “failed to establish probable cause for an arrest.”

Gray underwent major surgery, lapsed into a coma, and died on April 19.

“Mr. Gray was no longer breathing at all" when he was removed from the wagon.

His death sparked protests across Baltimore that escalated into riots.

"We know he was not buckled in the transportation wagon as he should have been. No excuses from me. Period," City Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said. "We know our police employees failed to get him medical attention in a timely manner multiple times."

“I find it hard to believe that all 5 cops were bad cops.”

If not, then the good ones might want to start talking.

“I have no idea whether this is justified or not and neither does anyone else here.”

Indeed. This could simply be political persecution or these cops could really be criminally negligent. We don’t know enough to tell yet. It’ll be months before the trial and before we know what’s really going on.

What’s funny is you have a State Attorney, who is working for a Republican Governor, going after a Police Department run by Democrats.

Where are the photos of the officers charged? Usually the press wastes no time posting the photos.

What’s up?

2) The knife he was carrying was legal.

Second amendment applies here. Any local law regarding knives is an infringement.

“Any local law regarding knives is an infringement. “

Mosby said Gray was following local law.

Not sure what you mean. Can you elaborate?

I’m all for the police doing their jobs and I believe that Freddie was a confirmed thug and a waste of space piece of dung, but to be honest, there is nothing wrong in running from the police if you are not doing anything wrong.

That said, these police are going to be charged with a bunch of bogus charges, just to make thugs happy.

RE: there is nothing wrong in running from the police if you are not doing anything wrong.

So, let’s say you’re a cop on the beat in a location known to be a drug trade zone. You approach a street and spot someone who saw you running away. What to do? Just let him go?

He was reported already on probation for prior offenses. I'd think not running from the cops would be a fairly standard condition of probation.

My question to fwdude was this:

Do good cops often wind up with a dead guy in the back of their van?

I swear, I have no idea how that dead hooker got in my trunk.

Can we arrange busses to take rioters to homes and neighborhoods wher the mayor and city officials all reside? Even send a couple to Sharpton’s neighborhood. I will donate a few bucks to fund it.
