please let me tell you what I hear:

I hear hopelessness
I hear oppression
I hear pain
I hear internalized oppression
I hear despair
I hear anger
I hear poverty

You hear these things? Fine. So do I. And we (White America) SEE them as well. But Julia, do you hear and see WHY these things are evident? Do you see that Obama, Holder, Sharpton, the media and popular culture has lead you down the garden path to hopelessness, oppression, pain, internalized oppression, despair, anger and poverty?

Do you see the black culture is the reason why you hear these things? With illegitimacy, ignorance and racial hatred as your core values? With liberal democrats keeping you enslaved with welfare and entitlements that are paid for by White America?

If I am indeed "perpetuating white privilege and white supremacy"; then it is because no other culture has or ever will create the standard by which we all have flourished and benefitted. Julia, get back with me when black thuggery and a hip-hop pants on the ground mentality begins to work. Then we in White America will start to take you seriously.

Hey Julia, how are those Democrat,Liberal policies working out for you. I'm sure you like the Affirmative Action policy. Maybe you are not as smart and gifted as the college professors told you you are. However,if it acts and steals and riots like a Thug, its a Thug.

Dear Salon,

We are in pain and angry too, and for oh so many reasons . However, we are not burning down our communities. We are venting on Facebook.

How about a view from a "gray" person. I'm Hispanic, I have no genetic or cultural "guilt" about racism. In fact, I have been a "victim" of "racism" several times in my life. My "people" could cry you a river over prejudice, intolerance, what have you.

The view from my seat, where I ain't got no dog in this hunt, is... GROW UP.

There are subcultures in America that refuse to take responsibility for themselves. They throw tantrums when not placated, they commit acts that are counter to the rules that we agree too. They refuse to take care of themselves.

Ultimately, until these subcultures start fixing the attitudes that hold them back, there will NEVER be a resolution to their problems, 95+% of which are self inflicted.

Welfare in ALL of its forms needs to be eliminated. We have had too many generations of people who simply won’t or can’t take care of themselves. Why? Because we PAY them to be poor. If you pay for something, you get more of it.

All of this happened out of good intentions. We are (or used to be, anyway) a rich country. Why should we just let people starve? Isn’t that inhumane? No, it isn’t.

Once you take away the consequences for sloth and other sins, you remove the incentive for people to avoid them. Why work at all if the issue of basic survival is “handled” by the taxpayers and the money is available on demand?

People don’t like to hear this, but in a truly free society, people have to live with the choices they make. And, like it says in the Bible, the wages of sin is death - or at least can be.

But, I am convinced that a society that does not go out of its way to take care of people and bail them out will end up with far fewer people who need to be taken care of. The hard part is getting people to just suck it up and let people fail and live (or not) with the consequences of the choices they make. Do that and you’ll see more people making the right choices.

Beautifully said. I'm with your interpretation 100 per cent. Over the years blacks have been given the same opportunity as any other race. But millions of blacks chose to like a thug style of life and what ends up is ignorance and with very little education.

I can respect what they are feeling right now.

I CANNOT respect what they are DOING.

When you (the author) are smart enough to acknowledge the difference, we can talk.

Until then, STFU.

If you cannot understand how experiences like mine or my students’ would lead to hopelessness, pain, anger, and internalized oppression, you are still not listening.

Blacks need to listen. To end the treatment that they are receiving, they need to change their behavior. They need to stop expecting the unearned and undeserved, and getting something for nothing. It is a matter of cause and effect and justice. To be treated well, you need to earn and deserve to be treated well.To earn and deserve to be treated well, you need to learn to make the right choices and do the right things, and live that lifestyle all the time.

Unless one gets lucky in life or acts criminally, the level of life stile one reaches in a civilized society generally depends on one’s degree of intelligence and one’s willingness to put it to good use with working.

A few years later: Go on a road trip with your mom. Refuse to get out of the car at a gas station in the boondocks, because you are sure the person with the Confederate flag bumper sticker is going to realize your white mother married a black man and hurt her (and you too, being the byproduct of said union). He’s carrying a rifle on a gun rack. Now even more terrifying.

I grew up in one of the most lily-white cities in one of the most lily-white states in the 70s and 80s.

I knew few black people. Funny enough, the few I did know were either in mixed-race marriages, or the product of mixed-race marriages (or liaisons). My cousin was one of the few in the group of offspring I knew - though her parents never married (don't even know if she ever knew her dad).

I don't recall any of them having a hard time of life. IIRC, none were taken out and killed.

My cousin grew up in Portland, and has a chip on her shoulder about race and all things whites did to hurt blacks, but she married a middle-class white guy.

Had she grown up in my state (Idaho), she'd likely have a much better attitude about things.

The reality of it is, a black person visiting a majority white area will more than likely live to tell about it, and more than likely never even be bothered.

Can you say the same if races were reversed?
