By far, the biggest most costly, deadliest riot in modern American history occurred in the 1990s.
I had a business in downtown LA at the time. It was only 2 years after the Northridge earthquake. What a decade. I barely escaped the riots the entire shopping center upstairs was looted then burned to the ground. the looters acted like it was a huge party, they brought the whole family. Anarchy is never very far away sadly, if we lose the police uhoh!!!!
My point was you don’t have to go all they way back to the 60s for some of the biggest, most violent events in our history.
In fact domestically, what occurred in ‘92 made the 1960s seem tame.
Other way around. The L.A. Riots were end of April, 1992. Northridge Quake was January 1994. I know because I was packed up to move from my place in the Miracle Mile area when the riots happened, and I thought it probably wasn't a good weekend to drive a truck with all my possessions around town, and I was living at my new place in the Hollywood Hills when Northridge happened.
