Yeah, Flick. This country is the Walking Dead. So what happens in 20 years, the rise of local war lords? Or do we just get nuked by our own damn plutonium?
To know the future, look to the past. I can only imagine some rough analog to what followed after the fall of Rome. The collapse of an empire and the rise of the City States like Venice or medieval walled cities.
Perhaps it won't all be bad. Just as the monks of the Middle Ages saved fragments of past learning from the Romans and Greeks, maybe whoever follows us will save artifacts of our knowledge. Instead of parchment scrolls it will be hard drives.
Endless cycles of growth and enlightenment followed by decline and Dark Ages. Sounds a bit like Asimov's "Foundation Trilogy", come to think of it.
