The first recording of Meredith Willson's timeless classic "Till There Was You" was released before The Music Man original Broadway cast album version. Promotional copies of the Capitol Records 45 rpm single, were released on November 26, 1957, even before the Broadway production had premiered. Produced by Nelson Riddle, it featured his orchestra and 17-year-old vocalist Sue Raney. The original cast recording was then released by Capitol on January 20, 1958 in both stereophonic & monaural versions and held the #1 spot on the Billboard charts for twelve weeks, remaining on the charts for a total of 245 weeks. The cast album was awarded "Best Original Cast Album" at the first Grammy Awards ceremony in 1958 and was inducted in 1998 as a Grammy Hall of Fame Award winner.

"Till There Was You" was covered by Anita Bryant in 1959 as a single for Carlton Records, reaching #30 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also notably covered by The Beatles on their 1963 LP "With the Beatles" in the UK and "Meet the Beatles!" in the United States.

On 1 January 1962, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Pete Best were auditioned by the Decca Records staff and performed a total of fifteen songs in just under one hour. Brian Epstein and the Beatles decided on a selection of covers the Beatles had performed in various clubs over the years, along with three Lennon–McCartney originals. Epstein had already pitched The Beatles to numerous labels including Columbia, Pye, Philips and Oriole all of whom had rejected signing the group.

The songs played at the Decca audition were recorded and several acetates were pressed. Eventually though, Decca Records also rejected the Beatles, saying "guitar groups are on the way out" and famously "The Beatles have no future in show business." Decca instead chose Brian Poole and the Tremeloes, who auditioned the same day as the Beatles. While Epstein was negotiating with Decca, he also approached EMI marketing executive Ron White. White (who was not himself a record producer) in turn contacted EMI producers Norrie Paramor, Walter Ridley, and Norman Newell, all of whom declined to record the Beatles as well. It was months later, after producer George Martin heard the Decca demos and decided to meet the band and Pete Best had been replaced by Ringo Starr that the Beatles went on to sign with EMI subsidiary Parlophone and the American subsidiary Capitol Records. At the Beatles' Royal Command Performance on 4 November 1963, following the song, John Lennon delivered a line to the well-heeled audience which has passed into legend: "For our last number I'd like to ask your help: Will the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands? And the rest of you, if you'll just rattle your jewelry ...".

Meredith Willson's widow later told The New York Times that his estate made more money from the royalties of the Beatles' cover of "Till There Was You" than it did from the original Musical.
