It blew up! Seriously. It’s not like the ones in Hawaii. Those cinder cones develop over time from small eruptions and spewing of ash and magma.

Whenever we drive through Yellowstone I stop on the west rim of the ancient crater (caldera) and explain it to the kids - you can’t see the other side of the crater. The park is inside of the crater.

The ash from the last time was tens of feet thick and extended to Kansas and beyond. When it happens again, it would probably end humanity I’m guessing. Well, at least civilized humanity. No crops throughout the world for a few years would do that.

Had to check my ash thickness. Tens of inches - not feet! Still - enough to wipe out existing crops, and more importantly the global cooling that would happen for many years afterwards.
