At New York Reception, Ted Cruz Is Said to Strike Different Tone Toward Gays

[Admin note] Title and text changed at source. New title: "Ted Cruz Is Guest of Two Gay Businessmen"
Senator Ted Cruz, the Republican presidential candidate, has positioned himself as a strong opponent to same-sex marriage, urging pastors nationwide to preach in support of marriage as an institution between a man and a woman, which he said was “ordained by God.”

But on Wednesday night, at a reception for him at the Manhattan apartment of two prominent gay hoteliers, the Texas senator struck quite a different tone.

During the gathering, according to two attendees, Mr. Cruz said he would have no problem if one of his daughters was gay. He did not mention his opposition to same-sex marriage, saying only that marriage is an issue that should be left to the states.

The dinner and “fireside chat” for about a dozen people with Mr. Cruz and his wife, Heidi, was at the Central Park South penthouse of Mati Weiderpass and Ian Reisner, longtime business partners who were once a couple and who have been pioneers in the gay hospitality industry.

“Ted Cruz said, ‘If one of my daughters was gay, I would love them just as much,’” recalled Mr. Reisner, a same-sex marriage proponent who described himself as simply an attendee at Mr. Weiderpass’s event.

Mr. Reisner and Kalman Sporn, who advises Mr. Cruz’s Middle East team and served as the moderator for the evening, said that the senator told the group that marriage should be left up to the states.

He did not bring up his own opposition to same-sex marriage during the evening, which focused mainly on foreign policy.

An aide to Mr. Cruz, reached on Thursday, reiterated that the senator is opposed to same-sex marriage.

Mr. Cruz has honed his reputation as a grassroots firebrand, who was strongly supportive of the Indiana religious freedom law that was recently blasted as discriminatory by gay rights activists. [snip]

““Ted Cruz said, ‘If one of my daughters was gay, I would love them just as much,”

From this the liberals are trying to spin that he’s switching sides? Pathetic attempt.

“It’s called class.”

Spot on!

Something rare in our society and even more rare in a politician.

What “tone toward gays” should a successful candidate have?

Yes indeed that’s a whole other can of worms.

Religious fourm divisions and discussions and the arguments need to be discussed there, and put behind us here when we face a common enemy right in front of us where we can unite and depend on the other person in the fox hole with us.

Actually I rather have someone who believes what they believe in with some passion fighting along with me in the fox hole even if we disagree on some issues, at least we know where we stand on a common cause fighting the enemy.

Of course I would not attend a gay wedding.

If I were to be asked that question and gotten a invitation, I would tell, no thanks, tell them that no better time than then to catch up on some yard work, go fishing, or find something more productive to do with my time like volunteering time to help the poor, or volulenteer at Ted Cruz campaign..

This is all on you, chief.

No, Mr. Custer; it actually isn't. (Back into your court now.)

I must say I am shocked that Cruz skipped the AG vote. I wonder why that was. Was he afraid that it would come back to haunt him if he voted yes or was he afraid it would haunt him if he voted no. As a Senator, he needs to vote in every single vote. That is a shame.

It’s a standard affair here on FR to sometimes post without reading a article, misplled words, or no sarcasm tags, it happens.

Thanks for the advice to noobies. What did I do that you would post this to me? I read the article, then read a post that I thought was from a troll but later learned was FR sarcasm in camo. And responded to it in good faith.

So many humorists (dolts?) here today. Not many good-natured ones though. Lost my humor cherry early in this thread.

You’re a Floridian, right? Why don’t you worry about your two senators and let those of us in Texas worry about how our senators vote? Okay?

Only thing touchy about me this morning was when my right index finger touch the trigger on my shotgun. Made a new friend, named Jake Rio. He’s cooling his spurs in my freezer at the moment.

Made you imagine you feel more like a man, eh? Just trembling with much greater respect now: You too have a shotgun.

I would but you are infiltrating the rest of us with your candidate who wants our vote so I will and can be critical of your little Senator. I say little seriously as he clearly doesn’t care about the job.

Ever engage in a “discussion” on the religion forum? Not much grace to be found there at any time of the year(s). Shame too that all Christian conservatives have such a hard time extending grace to each other when we have so many enemies knocking at the door. But the protestants and catholics feel equally compelled to “explain” to each other why the other is wrong. And I’m sure I’ve opened a can-o-worms just mentioning it. I hope they ping you too when they show up to correct me. ;)

You're right; that's the way it goes over yonder in the RF. Pretty much the same as on this thread, from my point of view. But, about your wink...were you flirting? Or was that also sarcasm.

[[He said at this present time, he would love his daughter if she was gay. That is all he said this time]]

I don’t know if that’s all he said- the article makes it appear that he also said ‘I would be fine with it if....’ Whether the article is being truthful or not is the question- If he did say that, as claimed by the gay person, then I am a bit disappointed- if he did not infact say that- then shame on NYT and that gay person for perpetuating a lie

[[States DO determine the definition of marriage. Texas has always recognized male/female marriage and that’s it. However, to make it plainer, a few years ago an amendment was made to our Texas Constitution that marriage is between a man and woman. Gay marriages are not recognized as legal in Texas.]]

That’s fine, they are simply upholding the holy matrimony that the church does, and they are reinterpreting it- however, when states step in and change the institution of marriage, then I’m not ok with that
