The progressives way towards ensuring the "village" raises all our children: criminalize parental decisions. It's for the children.

What the hell is wrong with the cops that they’ve become so slavishly obsessed with arresting people for non-crimes? Every last cop involved in these arrests should be fired and permanently barred from working in law enforcement.

I now have a little more understanding of the Harried mothers that drag their screaming child into the grocery store. I’m usually annoyed when a women brings four children into the store to buy one loaf of bread.

When I was 15, my mother left my sisters and me in our van while she went into the store. My youngest sister, 8 at the time, went and sat in the front seat because she could move around better or something. Then, a woman and her husband drove up, and the woman got out of her car and started flipping out screaming that my sister was “trapped in the car”. I was sitting in the middle of the van (which had tainted windows) so I guess she didn’t see me or my other sister. I had to open up the car and tell the hysterical woman that as a 15-year-old, I was perfectly capable of watching my sister, and that my 8-year-old sister was capable of opening the door if she needed to. She just left after that.

If these scenarios would've been the case when I was 6 or so, my mother would have been arrested because she left me in the car for 5 minutes while she used the post office to mail things.

Stop the world; I want to get off...

It would be nice if these prosecutors were held accountable for grossly overcharging these women.

If you are a parent, have you ever left one in a car in your drive way while running in to get something?

How about while going in to pay for gas?

If you are a parent and haven’t, do you live in a high-crime neighborhood?

I suspect that most of the people with the attitude of NEVER and who make these phone calls have no experience of actually raising children or are, if one digs deeply enough, hypocrites.

I see your point. This article tweaks me because I grew up dealing with the terrorism of CPS and the cops who operate with them. The Constitution means absolutely nothing to these bastards and while some of them do important work my experience was that too many of them get off on their absolute power to terrorize people, invade their homes without a warrant, and to ruin the lives of people who fight back at them.

I’m with you, no matter what other FReepers say. It appears that two of the children in this article were young enough to be in car seats. You don’t leave a child young enough to be in a car seat alone in a car, unless there’s another child in the car who’s at least of babysitting age. Should a mother’s life be ruined over it? No. Should it be a misdemeanor? Yes.

Infants, right. But by the time time kid is old enough to open the window when too hot it should be fine. I remember many times where I would rather sit in the parking lot reading or listening a radio. The problem with modern cars is that window are electric and your kid would need the keys, which they shouldn't be trusted with until well into their twenties.

What a disturbing story. Every CPS story I read is out of hell. Those people are just outright monsters, as well as the cops and judges who back them up. They use stories of actual child abuse to justify unleashing horror on regular families. They’ve GOT to be reined in.

I’m not a parent, but while in college, I was a regular babysitter/mother’s helper for a family with 3 kids who were 1, 4, and 7 at the time. I drove them around a lot on errands. Never, ever would I have thought of leaving them in the car while I ran into a store to get something.

An eight year-old is hardy an infant. Kids aren’t going to die in 5 or 10 minutes. The author obviously has Samaritans confused with Pharisees.

Never, ever talk to the police.
