Maybe not in two years, but I find myself wondering if the situation isn’t ripe for conservative politicians to make real inroads into the middle-class vote in the state. Or don’t they have any prominent enough to even get a foothold?

Pete Wilson had a GOP Assembly briefly from 1995-96 and that marked the beginning of the rapid decay in the state. You'd need Conservative Governors and legislators running the state for decades to begin to undo the damage.
