In order to get a real feel for the Everglades, you really need to do it by airboat. A good airboat guide can take you out to the heart of it all. Birds, gators, frogs; even the old camps that are grandfathered in and have been handed down from generation to generation. Once you see that, you get a feel for what it really is.

As a disclaimer, I'm a native Floridian. On the one hand, that might make me impartial but on the other, I'm used to mangroves and swamps so even for me, the Everglades is special.

Agreed. Canoeing to a chickee (raised platform - keeps gators and other critters from coming into the tent) is another good way to experience the Glades. There’s tons of wildlife - you just need to visit when they’re most active.
