A professionally shot video of Barack Obama from 1995 has recently surfaced. Shot at the Cambridge, Mass. Public Library, the video captures a skinny, youthful Obama promoting his then newly released memoir, Dreams from My Father.
In this hour-long presentation, Obama openly talks about his relationship with his mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, a Communist and pornographer. Perhaps more importantly, Obama gives us a much clearer picture of who he was in 1995, on the cusp of his political career, than we had seen before. Some observations:
The Obama of 1995 was not a very good speaker. He had a halting delivery, stuttered, was obviously nervous, and, although congenial enough, could not tell a joke. What Obama did do well was read. He read a dramatic passage from his book for a full fifteen minutes uninterrupted and used multiple voices halfway credibly.
Over the years, Obama’s handlers have exploited his ability to read and sheltered him as far as possible from impromptu speaking. Had Obama’s teleprompter malfunctioned during his breakthrough speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, he would not be president today. He has always depended on the eloquence of others, and he still cannot tell a joke.
The Obama of 1995 was not a firebrand, at least not on the surface. He presented himself to the small, roughly half-black Cambridge audience as an optimistic, easy-going liberal. In the question-and-answer session, he distinguished himself from the more obviously angry black professor Cornel West. “Cornel West has to go back to his Bible. Got to have faith,” said Obama in a black accent almost as cringe-inducing as the one Hillary rolls out on occasion. In fact, Obama turned that accent on throughout the presentation, especially when answering questions from black women…………………

Looks like the same nose to me.
I made a copy of Obama’s 2012 DNC acceptance speech. I highlighted in one color the parts where he got people’s heads shaking in agreement. I then highlighted his sales hook in another color. If you were to ask people what it was about Obama that they liked they would repeat back the sales hooks. The reason why he did so badly during that one debate with Romney was he couldn’t get his hypnotizing mojo going. It takes Obama about 45 minutes to work his magic and he couldn’t get his rhythm going. So, he is not totally unflappable.
Compare the front-on pic of the young Obama wearing a blue shirt and the lower one of the more recent vintage from a similar angle. It does appear that the bridge is narrower now. That should not happen- noses keep growing all our lives. Is it possible he had some sort of nose operation after using too much blow?

Yeah, I think the funniest picture of Obama is the one where he has the prompters set up in the elementary classroom. What a putz.
All versions look like the same nose to me, and I’m a realist painter who does a bit of portraiture. What may make the young version look larger to you is that it is lit too brightly... the camera’s exposure setting, in other words. The brighter it is the bigger it will look because the light washes out the details that clue our eyes into depth, for example, whoch would make the feature seem wider.
It’s true that noses grow larger with age. They can also appear larger when people suffer from hay fever, etc... I’ve got pics of me enduring such attacks in my late teens where my schnozz is WAY bigger than today... it literally was!
But in the case of the brightly lit Obama youth pic I am certain the effect is merely lighting.

Obama has occasional press conferences and grants interviews. He answered questions in front of the a large group of House Republicans early in his first term and none of them came away saying he cannot answer unscripted questions.
He has told jokes on camera and gotten decent laughs, even before he was president.
But it is true that his purported eloquence seems to have had a lot to do with speech writers.
