“Considering a recent Gallup poll found that only 3.4 percent of the U.S. population identifies as homosexual, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, the number of films featuring homosexual characters would seem to be inordinately large.”
Isn’t that a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison? Wouldn’t a more meaningful comparison be comparing the percentage of homosexual characters in movies (rather than the percentage of movies with at least one homosexual character) to the population ?

In that respect the percentage of homosexual characters would be significantly larger when you consider that most movies don't have more than a handful of actual characters (excluding roles like waiter in a restaurant with one line and a total of five seconds on screen).
