I think the only argument for shooting him in the back was if he was KNOWN to be armed and dangerous; the reasoning would be that he might take hostages or such.

I'm against using deadly force merely for what someone "might" do. I'd listen to an argument about what someone is likely to do. Anybody "might" do anything.
Armed ≠ Dangerous.
