How is it illegal to build your own home in TX?

It’s not illegal anymore. The law we called “trainwreck” made it illegal. You had to have a “builder of record”. Otherwise you couldn’t get a loan. And I don’t think you could even build your own home if you had cash. The utility companies wouldn’t hook up to your house.

Lot’s of companies popped up because of this law. These new companies were “be your own builder” type companies. Basically for a fee they’d sell you a book on how to calculate a budget, how to get a construction loan, how to schedule trades, etc. Several of them did very well. And you can imagine how this pissed off the Bob Perrys of Texas. It was an unforeseen circumstance. hee hee

Those companies would also offer their clients “management” of the job for so much a sq. foot. They’re still around. It means you really do control the costs.

Look up “owner/builder” or “be your own builder” in Texas. And that’s not “bring your own bottle” even though that’s still an option in lots of Texas juke joints.
