If I was ever being investigated by the police and *knew* I wasn’t guilty I’d give them anything they wanted.Fingerprints...DNA...computers,etc,etc,etc.But I’d never take a lie detector because it’s basically junk science...no more valid than the global warming scam.

I was once falsely accused of threatening a guy who it turned out was a nut and a hard core criminal. Part of the accusations was that I cursed him repeatedly.

I was a Federal agent at the time and had to be investigated.

I was not really worried because as luck would have it, another agent happened to be present but unseen at the scene. His written report backed me up totally. Still they had to do the investigation.

The interesting thing was the inspector finished the examination then we just sat there for another half hour and shot the bull. To my surprise he mentioned that he noted I had never used a single word of profanity during the entire time. It then struck me that he was still investigating when I thought he had finished and we were just talking.

On one hand, it is probably better to just not say anything in a serious case but in my particular situation, since it was pretty clear cut, I was probably better off totally cooperating.

I did realize just how tricky they could be.

Bad idea. Everything will be used AGAINST you. Nothing will be used to exonerate you. They don’t need your help.

“If I was ever being investigated by the police and *knew* I wasn’t guilty I’d give them anything they wanted.Fingerprints...DNA...computers,etc,etc,etc”

you are making several assumptions that history has proven untrue:

1. That police are objective.
2. That police are out trying to find a guilty party.
3. That being innocent means you will not be charged.
4. That being innocent means you will not be convicted.

This is not how it works.

They quickly find the person THEY consider the most likely to have committed a crime and then do their best to prove a case against them.

Anything you say can and will be used against you.
You will be lied to.
You will be tricked.

Get a lawyer. Do not talk to them without a lawyer.

No, do not give the police anything if you suspect that they think you are guilty of something, even though you know you have done nothing wrong. The correct response is: “It appears to me that you think I have done something, therefore I would like to have an attorney present before this interview goes any further.” Do not give them anything, no fingerprints, no DNA, no statement. Do not let them into your house or your car, or anything. You do not know what is going on their minds, what they are looking for, and with the best of intentions, and with all innocence, you could find you have dug yourself into such a deep hole, you cannot climb out of it.
