By that time they had created the Confederate States of America with a central government. They did not consider themselves a coalition but a country.

Fine. Let's get you on record as to the reason Brigadier General Irwin McDowell was leading 18,000 men to Richmond.

Was he going to Richmond to free the slaves? Surely he had some purpose in being sent on that mission. Could you tell me what it was?
