Poor Mexicans don’t buy a handful of pricy ingredients. They buy enough rice, masa, lard, beans, and chickens to last a month. And then they produce food that tastes wonderful and kills you quick!

Gwyneth Paltrow's kitchen. (one of them)

Is she going to use only the appliances, pots, and pans used by the poor? And where does that $29/week number come from anyway? $120/month? Even homeless panhandlers can and do scrounge more than that.

And barbacoa or marinated chicken. On easter sunday there was a mexican meat market open. Since HEB was closed, I stopped in. I bought 3 pounds of marinated chicken breast for 5.25. Give each family member a quarter pound on a taco, with rice & beans on the side, you eat for 3 nights for less than 10 dollars for the family.

Righto!

One of the more hilarious memes of recent years is the healthy, low0fat Mexican diet.

We used to eat regularly with a recent Mexican immigrant family in Billings. Only time I’ve ever seen anybody with a 5 gallon tub of lard on the floor next to the stove.

When my best friend was pregnant with her first baby in the ‘70s, we ate lunch every day at the Mexican “roach coach”, Bennie’s, in Anchorage, Alaska. And some dinners. When the ultra-healthy kid was born, the doctor asked, “What the heck have you been eating?!” Pretty funny.
