What excuse does an armed, trained, experienced police officer have to shoot an unarmed man, posing no threat to the officer or anyone else, 5 times in the back?
The only sane rationalization I can envision at the moment: the two WERE struggling hand-to-hand, and Scott DID seem to remove something (a Tazer, a dangerous thing for an opponent to take under such circumstances), putting the cop in the awkward position of using lethal force lest non-lethal be leveraged into lethal ... as the cop transitioned to preparing to use lethal force, Scott dropped the Tazer and fled, and the cop didn’t transition out of the lethal-force mindset in time to avoid shooting. Understandable, though completely unacceptable and worthy of severe consequences.
The old meme was “the child had his hands up and unarmed, and shot in the back.” Not that he was a 215-pound thug.
This time, the meme is that “he was ‘running away’ and no immediate danger to anyone.”
NO one at the time knew why he was running away. The thug just as easily could have just blown away 20 victims, yet was still not an immediate threat to anyone. So letting him go has became an African thing, except, of course, in Africa.
That scenario, as worded, is so sad, the only facts you omitted was that he was rushing on his way to church to serve mass, after serving breakfast to homeless handicapped lesbian minority alien children earlier in the day...
