By the time the vote came, at 1:29 a.m., the Senate Subcommittee on Border Security had more than its share of tears and raised voices. Nearly 10 hours earlier, when the hearing on Senate Bill 1819 started, the vote was a foregone conclusion: In a 2-1 party-line vote, GOP lawmakers on the panel approved the controversial bill that would strip undocumented students from any right to pay in-state tuition at a public Texas college.
Sen. Donna Campbells proposal now moves to the Senates full Veterans Affairs and Military Installations Committee, where it undoubtedly will pass. Given the large Republican majority in the Senate, led by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick who made this legislation a major campaign issue the chances of SB 1819 winning Senate approval always have been high.
That may be where the momentum stops. With just about 50 days left in the legislative session, the House has yet to even consider a similar bill. House Speaker Joe Straus, a San Antonio Republican, is a well-known supporter of the law, a throwback to the kind of Republicans, including former Gov. Rick Perry, who joined Democrats in 2001 to pass the law with huge bipartisan majorities.

Joe Straus. The Gift that Keeps On Giving...
Good. About damn time.
Rick Perry was responsible for this abortion. He needs to sign the repeal and apologize to every Citizen of the United States and of the several States for discriminating against them in favor of illegal aliens.
Plyler V. Doe was a disaster for the United States that also involved Texas educational benefits, but it was on the other side of the equation. He should have learned from that.
Wish we could repeal that one too.
There is a groundswell of anti-illegal alien sentiment growing in America. Americans no longer fight ANYTHING unless and until it directly affects them. A few home invasions by MS-13, DUI traffic fatalities, rapes of underage girls by these filthy Mexican and Central American invaders, etc., has finally hit home for many Americans thanks to King Zero. Enough is enough already.
Rick is no longer our governor. Greg Abbott is Texas Gov.
Sorry. You’re right. Forgot that Good Ol’ Rick was out stumpin’ now.
Assume Abbott is willing...
“Joe Straus. The Gift that Keeps On Giving...”
Does Straus still have an iron grip on the House, or have enough conservatives been elected to outvote him and his Dim buddies?
He's still got a good grip but it's not the stranglehold that he had. He lost a few allies to the Tea Party and he no longer has Dewhurst as a backstop in the Senate. We may be able to knock him off next time around.
Dr Donna Campbell that is. Nice.
There are enough to toss him from power, but like Boehner, the spoils of the Speakership are carefully meted out. One fellow had campaigned specifically on voting against Joe Straus, then turned around and voted him in anyway.
Any hopes of a good Legislative session were lost when Joe Straus remained Speaker.
If they are in the country illegally, why are they even allowed to enroll in our colleges in the first place, let alone receive in-state tuition?
