The Greek government says Germany owes Greece nearly 279bn (£204bn; $303bn) in war reparations for the Nazi occupation during World War Two.
It is the first time Greece has officially calculated what Germany allegedly owes it for Nazi atrocities and looting during the 1940s.
However, the German government says the issue was resolved legally years ago.
The new figure given by Greek Deputy Finance Minister Dimitris Mardas includes 10.3bn for an occupation loan that the Nazis forced the Bank of Greece to pay.
"According to our calculations, the debt linked to German reparations is 278.7bn euros," Mr Mardas told a parliamentary committee investigating responsibility for Greece's debt crisis.

this is great
There are several odd pieces to this story.
First, of the 278 billion Euro....roughly 12-billion Euro is for the bank loan episode. It should be noted that only the Bank of Greece was involved...NOT the government of Greece. If the Bank of Greece took the case into any German court...the settlement would likely occur. But there’s a twist to this...the document signed by both parties suggested it was ONLY a loan, with zero-percent interest. When paid back, it’d be the original amount. For some reason, the Bank of Greece has never taken any interest or opportunity to pay the money back.
Second, if you sat and speculated on the reason why the Bank of Greece never showed any curious nature to the loan...we might eventually come to realize that a fair sum of the money loaned....was originally Jewish family money or Jewish industrial money. I’m only suggesting this...no evidence to prove such....but it’s odd that a private bank would never show interest in getting such money back.
Third, the Bank of Greece is limited to roughly 35-to-40 percent ownership by the government of Greece. The rest is private ownership. Even if they got the 12-odd billion back, only 4 billion would go to the gov’t and the rest would go to the stockholders of the Bank of Greece. No political figure in Greece will be honest and admit that to the public.
Fourth, of the 260-odd billion left? It’s for victims and infrastructure destroyed. Here is the odd story on this case. In the 1950s/1960s....the Germans came to pay off a sum of money for each single victim. It was mutually agreed that the sum paid...was enough...case closed. For Greece to have amnesia and pretend that the money paid then didn’t occur....is comical. As of yet....NO one has said what happened to the money paid by the Germans and if individual families got the money or it just filtered into gov’t hands in Greece.
Fifth, the infrastructure money deal? That was talked about in the 1960s as well, and a sum paid there. Greeks being unfamiliar with the historical piece of this episode? Yes, it’s curious.
At best, the Greek National Bank is entitled to the 12-odd billion....NOT the Greek government, unless they want their part ownership in the bank to accept the incoming funds and it’s limited to roughly 40-percent. In a normal court setting in Germany....they could produce the documents and get the money back. My hunch is that they haven’t wanted to open up this episode of history for some reason which would be embarrassing. The rest of the ‘loot’? False story with comical Greek acting at best.
Apparently once on the dole it’s hard to get off the dole. This applies to nations as well as individuals.
Greeks, time to work for your living and actually produce the wealth you consume.
Thanks for your informative post!
And everyone from Egypt to India are asking for compensation for Alexanders invasion and empire...

who gives out 0% loans if not forced to do so by gunpoint.
...and imagine how the interest charges have piled up in the intervening 2,500 years!
I believe at that point it is no longer a 'loan'...
Who does paperwork when you could just walk in and take the money? Yes, there’s actual paperwork....signatures...zero-percent interest written, and it shows some intent or stupidity upon the Germans over the episode. They clearly weren’t capable of robbing the Greeks which you would normally assume the rules would be in this case.
The question be “why”?
It would be curious to know if the Greek National Bank grew from 1932 to this loan point at a significant rate, and if a fair amount of this money was simply Jewish family/industry money from Germany.
The reparations end to this deal? Oddly, the entire purpose of the Marshall Plan, was to prevent reparations from occurring where France, England and rest would go after Germany....so the US paid the reparations money out of our own pocket. The millions that Greece got in the period after the war? We (the US) covered the reparations.
Finally, you might note that the Italians did a fair amount of damage to Greece....same war. No pay-back on Italy.
Going back to the German well cuz their worthless socialist state done drained their own dry.
Germany to Athens: we want Mykonos, Rhodus, Corfu, and Crete as security.
bingo
The US Federal Reserve.
When Socialists run out of OPM, they start in with nonsense like this. Gimme gimme gimme so I can keep living beyond my means. Reparations in the US are the same scam. If we are going to go along with this, what about Turkey paying Greece for the several centuries of occupation that the Ottomans had in Greece? Or what about Persia demanding reparations from Greece for sacking and burning Persepolis? Or what about Iran giving reparations for sacking Athens?
Greece wants 279 euros for WWII reparations? OK then. Let me see....how many countries did Alexander the Great conquer, loot, plunder and rape throughout Europe, Asia and even as far afield as Egypt in North Africa (Alexandria in Egypt is named after Alexander the Great after all). Using the same crappy voodoo maths that the communist, something for nothing Greek government is using , I make that..let me see..279 trillion Euros that the Greek government owes all these countries. May be time for them to start coughing up.
That’s cool, but now Greece needs to pay the U.S. for liberating them — let’s say, a trillion Euros?
