What's to fear from a constitutional convention convened to create a balanced budget amendment? A most they create a balanced budget amendment, which would be good for the country. There has been plenty of discussion over the years that say a convention could not exceed its authority, in this case, to create a balanced budget amendment. The results, if poorly written, could be a disaster and/or create new careers for attorneys. Would the balanced budget amendment be across the board? Would it exclude things like the military or social services? What about in times of emergency or war? What qualifies as either? And how implemented, immediately or over a period of years?

Probably the biggest issue will be the makeup of the constitutional convention. The simplest would be one representative from each state. But that won't fly with many population-heavy states.

“What’s to fear from a constitutional convention convened to create a balanced budget amendment?”

The Constitution is silent on how this would work only tasking the Congress to call the Convention. Constitutionally, this means Congress will have complete power to call the Convention to include the subjects to be debated and the makeup of the Convention.

I’m sure the elected members of Congress will not allow any representation other than themselves. Too many opportunities for grandstanding to pass that bye. Also, they will want to ensure they are in charge to prevent things like term limits. IOW, the makeup of the Constitutional Convention will mirror the makeup of Congress. Now, exactly how will this improve things?

That is a deception I am afraid. Once the convention is opened then the entire constitution will be up for amendment.
Congress will have a field day with it. And you think you have problems now.

Conventions were for an intelligent and moral people interested in maintaining their freedom. Not many of those people exist today. The country is full ijiots.

The simplest is to let each state send as many delegates as it wants. Who cares how many delegates each state sends to the convention? Each state still gets one and only one vote.
