The "concern" didn't even pass the smell test then. The funding campaign was already well under way by the time the "concern" was first raised.
Consider:
The names and associations involved are well known within the political conservative community. That means that they are who they say they are, or they are being impersonated by imposters.
It was being done far too publicly for it to have progressed as far as it had without the real personalities being aware of it.
If it was being run by imposters, the real personalities would have issued public warnings for people not to donate, and gotten it shut down.
If it was being run by the actual personalities and organizations presented, they have much more to lose in terms of damage to their reputations and livlihoods than they'd ever be able to get out of it if it was a scam.
There was no legitimate reason I can see to believe this was a scam.
