Cruz rockets to third in new poll

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has jumped to third place in the prospective Republican presidential field since making his bid official last week, according to a new poll.

The survey, released Wednesday by Democratic firm Public Policy Polling, found Cruz surging from 5% support last month to 16% support from Republican primary voters this month.

He now trails only Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who leads the pack with 20% support, and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who takes 17%. Cruz was in sixth place in last month's poll.

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul both take 10% support, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee tie with 6% each, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie takes 4% and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry has 3% support.

That's a steep drop for Carson, who was polling at 18% support last month, and a drop for Huckabee from 10% last month.

Cruz became the first Republican to enter the presidential race last week, and has been touring early primary states since, with events in New Hampshire over the weekend and a jaunt through Iowa planned for Wednesday and Thursday.

The PPP survey indicates his announcement boosted his profile with conservatives and voters nationwide. Cruz tripled his support among those who identified in as "very conservative" in the poll, up from 11% last month to 33% this month.

By next month or earlier, Cruz will be in the lead.

Hint: He was never out of the lead. CNN is lying.

I should have said even CNN and MSNBC could no longer deny it. I stand corrected.

The most likely way the debate would be unfairly slanted would involve ignoring Cruz, rather than giving him biased questions.

I don’t guess you heard Jeff Ward today with the Religious Freedom callers? The left - and Ward is definitely one of them, forget the ‘libertarian’ - are desperately trying to drown Ted’s conservative message which is out of the bag now and bringing in donations.

Walker @ 20 and Cruz @ 16.

The pro-amnesty-for-illegal-alien candidate loses to the (IRC) secure border candidates 26-17. (And other pro-amnesty candidate Rubio is at 6%, with no hope of improvement.)

The GOP insiders have much to learn on the deep, unwavering, and motivated secure-border vote from the MAJORITY of GOP voters.

Some of these guys need to drop out. Carson, Santorum, Huckabee and i-Carly need to do the world a favor and stay out.

Liberal Romney won many primaries by plurality, he didn’t start winning outright until it was pretty much a done deal.

I think this is also Jeb’s strategy.

"Cruz will utterly destroy Jebbie in any fairly moderated primary debate."

Wasn't the last fairly-moderated debate pre-Nixon Kennedy?

I’ll wager some of those praising Cruz today, will disown him in the not too distant future. He’ll do something, say something, consider something that the most perfect among us disagree with. As such, they’ll throw another hissy fit and stay home in 2016.

We’ll destroy our own candidates in 2016, just like we did in 2012...don’t doubt it.

I was saying that he was at 3% at the beginning of his senate run and he won that in something of a landslide.

I quite agree. That was McCain's strategy, as well.

However, 21% won't be enough to claim a plurality. The GOP-e is running on fumes.

no cruz needs to make his case and win those that poll for these candidates and have them vote for him. that’s the process.
