My phone won’t work in my house very well, nor in many buildings on my campus. And I’ve had some not survive a drop by my hand (3, 3 1/2 feet off the ground). How did they find ANY phones that survived a 500 MPH+ crash into a mountain?

They didn’t. They found a memory card.

It wasn't phoned. It was merely recorded.

They didn't claim the phone was still working, only that they were able to read its memory chip.

On my drive home, thy were talking about this on the radio. They said that the phone was complete demolished .... but that the chip inside was intact. When they put the chip in a new phone and played the video .. it yielded this.
