After some setbacks over the past several weeks, top aides to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker tell Breitbart News that hes toughening up his immigration position as he learns more about the issue.
Hes for border security first, enforce the laws on the books, fix legal immigration system with national interest in mind and then deal with those here, Walker spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski said in an email.
Kukowskis comments to Breitbart News come after a trip Walker took on Friday to the border with Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
A lot depends on what the governor means by a: legal immigration system with national interest in mind. Still, this could be a step toward Walker remaking his image on immigration in the manner of Senate Judiciary Committee subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest chairman Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL).
The question becomes: What does Walker think is a legal immigration system that serves the national interest? While he hasnt laid that out yet, theres a massive opportunity for either successor failuredepending on where he comes down on this matter.
He looks forward to further detailing his ideas on securing the border and enforcing the laws, Kukowski added. Yes, at the minimum, there needs to be penalties put in place. In addition to securing our borders, the federal government must enforce our laws, penalize those who break the law including paying back taxes, and implement a universal E-Verify system so employers are hiring legal employees.
Where Walker comes down on the immigration system could make or break his candidacy...

Cruz was damn lucky we let his Cuban father in this country.
LOL! yes I think Walker needs to come in to the border cities also to see what a mess we are in.
Going back and forth on immigration already tells me you are not clear in your guts & belief system. Never trust him on this.
Ok to blast Walker for Cruz fans but not vice versa.
You got it.
Hell even McCain or Romney would have done better then the Muslim in the White house.
Agreed—a campaign year conversion is never to be trusted.
It’s a shame that OKC’s two-time governor Mary Fallin—who truly has an anti-illegal immigration record—isn’t running.
Backin 2002 Walker signed a bill in support of amnesty as a as Milwaukee County executive.
Here is an excerpt:
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors does hereby express its support for comprehensive immigration reform legislation that will provide greater opportunity for undocumented working immigrants to obtain legal residency in the United States and joins the AFL-CIO, the U.S. Catholic Conference, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and other leading business, religious and civic leaders and organizations as well as the City of Milwaukee in urging the U.S. Congress to adopt such legislation.
Whereas the stability of many sectors of our society is dependent on the labor of working immigrants, including those who have no legal status, and the lack of status of these undocumented workers makes them fearful of retaliation, so that many of them endure long hours and low pay, poor working conditions, sexual harassment, discrimination, and
Whereas undocumented working immigrants in Milwaukee and throughout these United States make substantial contributions to our economic, civil, and cultural life but unjustly remain vulnerable to exploitation, now, therefore
Walkers campaign team says thats not amnesty.
In 2006 as a Milwaukee executive, Walker supported the McCain-Kennedy Immigration Bill.
“The 2006 resolution embracing the McCain-Kennedy bill was sent to Walker by the Milwaukee Board of Supervisors. He signed it despite returning or vetoing numerous other matters that year. The final version of the resolution signaled support for criminalizing federal immigration law violations and increased border fencing. But it also referred to a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and full labor rights.”

He also recently invited Mexico to set up a consulate in WI.
Finally we know that he is tight with Reince Preibus. That is questionable in itself for other reasons.
I know everyone wants to believe that Walker is some conservative knight in shining armor who has no impure beliefs. The data just doesn’t support that. I like him other than this issue. Here I don’t trust him.
Quit believing what you want it to be, and start looking at the evidence. It’s there.
Finally....I wouldn’t put any stock in the political “Whitehouse Road” Conversion that we have recently seen. Those are never sincere. If he didn’t know that amnesty was wrong over the past 13 years, what suddenly changed his mind?...oh yeah....an election.
Ain’t that the truth!
Well that’s your opinion.
Your problem is with Walker not me.
Have fun with that.
Personally, I appreciate ANY politician that, having been informed and “educated” on a particular issue and consequently changing his original stance, as someone who is THINKING and not reacting. No one knows everything at all times. How many of you, having researched the facts as they have been presented, have NOT changed your minds once you “saw the light”? Don't condeme ANY politician for changing his/her mind if they truly believe in making said change.
The best asset Ted has to communicate himself as largely in the enforcement camp is the SPANISH AD he just cut.
If he’s in tight with Preibus then why won’t Preibus say so or even hint that he will wait until the process is over before handing out my funds/donation to the likes of a Bush over Walker? That is what fries my ass and why I have written not just Preibus.I have written over a dozen. I have received not one reply. All only ask me for MONEY.
I like walker. He is the best qualified in my opinion. Things can change like John Kasich running.
“A lot depends on what the governor means by a: legal immigration system with national interest in mind.”
His position is “evolving.”
Unless he’s willing to use the term “deport” in conjunction with illegals, he’s just trying to fool folks.
He’s just trying to get rid of the smell of what he just stepped in. How can anyone running for President not have a firm position on this issue to begin with and be able to clearly articulate their position? I liked Walker as a second to Cruz, but if he has started this shilly shallying, not so much.
And we tend to know what that means.
Hes for border security first, enforce the laws on the books, fix legal immigration system with national interest in mind and then deal with those here,
Very good, about time, I can accept that as long as it doesn’t turn into a mass or general amnesty and we still need to know about his plan for legal immigration. At this point I’m happy to have two acceptable candidates on my list.
1. SENATOR TED”THE FIREMAN” CRUZ
2. Governor Scott Walker
[I liked Walker as a second to Cruz, but if he has started this shilly shallying, not so much]
If the Walker camp is already reporting setbacks, he must be losing his momentum, Meanwhile Ted is CRUZin all to way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
