I was a little surprised to see them on FOX this morning tossing out the possibility that the media doesn’t know the American people as well as they think they do.

They think flying to someplace like Lincoln Nebraska makes them familiar with flyover country but it doesn’t. They need to spend a year living in a little town like where I live with well under 500 people. There is no Starbucks or McDonalds. We chat with our neighbors at the post office and church. We have no interest or need for lectures on race or gay and lesbian rights. When the media types do that, they might begin to have an idea of what flyover country is really like.

I agree. My wife and I live on a cattle farm outside a small town in rural, north central Florida. No social life to speak of. We are retired and interact with our neighbors occasionally and some extended family but mainly it's the cows that keep us occupied.

The only named stores here are an Ace hardware, CVS pharmacy, a Subway sandwich shop and a Dollar General. One bank, post office, two gas stations, one grocery, one feed and seed supply and one funeral home. No barber, no auto parts store or mechanic garage, no theater, no restaurants, but several churches. There is no industry here so everyone that works, drives a good distance for their jobs.

Both my wife and I have college degrees and have lived in large metropolitan cities, and have been in the fast lane many times. But I believe real America is embodied in the small towns and unincorporated "places" in the vast rural areas of this country. I watch the media on TV and they don't have a clue what goes on outside the elite northeast and DC. They could live on another planet for all I can tell.
