I think it was murder not an accident. First off that was a chauffeur driven car and he demanded the keys from the chauffeur. Why? And Mary-Jo left her purse and keys behind at the party. Why again? Was she forced into the car? Then when the car went into the canal, he gets out but she can't? He got out because he wasn't in the car when it went into the water. He jumped out before it did. Plus the car was in shallow water and he doesn't report it for 9 hours? Why? He knows damn well the cops would have protected him if he was drunk. No, he wanted to make sure she was dead. And she didn't die from drowning, she died from suffocation, they said taking her 3 to 4 hours for her air pocket to run out of air. Imagine sitting there for 3 or 4 hours while he's standing around. Kennedy then had the medical examiner change it to "accidental drowning" rather than suffocation. It was all a scam. I think he locked her in the back seat of the car, could have smacked her around as there was blood on her blouse, then he drove it to the edge and jumped out, the car was going slow because old Teddy didn't want to hurt himself when he jumped out which is why the car was right by the bridge. He killed her deliberately, and of course the Democraps later on ran him for President.
