$9 of spending cuts to $1 of tax increases was never an honest deal. First of all, in Washington, a "cut" is only a reduction in the rate of increase, not an actual cut. Second, Reagan and Bush 41 made similar deal with Democrat run Congresses, and the result was that the tax increases happened, but the promised spending cuts never materialized. In fact, the higher tax revenue allowed spending to grow even faster than it otherwise would have.
The truth is, no tax increases at all should be accepted. Taxes and spending are both already too high.
