The co-pilot of the Germanwings flight that authorities believe was deliberately crashed in the French Alps was certified by U.S. aviation officials.
The co-pilot, 28-year-old Andreas Guenter Lubitz, was granted status as an airman by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Jan. 6, 2012, according to the agency’s online database.
French authorities have accused Lubitz of locking the captain of Germanwings Flight 9525 out of the cockpit and intentionally crashing the plane, killing all 150 people who were on board.
The FAA certification lists Lubitz as a “private pilot (foreign based)” who is proficient in single engine landings and gliders.
“English proficient,” the document says. “Issued on basis of and valid only when accompanied by Germany. Pilot license number(s) 27788 9460. All limitations and restrictions on the German pilot license apply.”
This isn’t news. I hold the exact same type of FAA certificate; the only requirement is a licence from another ICAO state.
Co-pilot just following the lead set forth by Øbama, vis-a-vis how to take down a ship of state. Only, in this case, it was a ship of air.
The terrorists announced several years ago that they were looking specifically for believers in their religion who were of Western origin, who looked, acted, and talked like citizens of Western countries.

No, this "kid" took out 150 people with him. At least the A-10 pilot had the decency to just take out himself and $20 million worth of Uncle Sam's toys.

Anyhow, in the present case, this is now at least the 4th known instance of a deliberate crash by a commercial crew member, and at least the second enabled by a lockable cockpit door.

They note “... whether the introduction of secure cockpit doors after the September 11 terrorist attacks in the U.S. has created a new safety issue.”
In this case there was also an apparent lack of a protocol for having a flight attendant stand in so there are always 2 in the cockpit.

Misleading. The FAA included him on a list of certified pilots. He held no FAA certification.

No link, but also read a comment suggesting the pilot did NOT leave the cockpit once from the flight inbound to Barcelona-El Prat. Can't find any information on the crew/plane prior to boarding for GermanWings 9525 Barcelona-El Prat.
It seems like there are going to need to be additional systems built into the plane that can override the pilots, but those will carry their own risks. It will also be helpful if we can check on the mental health of those who are flying the planes. Finally, I would like a law that forces airlines to provide the names and biographies of pilots. I believe I should have the right to refuse to fly on any plane piloted by a muzzie.

My understanding is that this is the rule in the US, and we’ve had no intentional crashes due to lock-outs.

When that happens, they’ll upgrade the requirement to FA with martial arts training.
I’m a pilot. I haven’t flown in years, and don’t plan to. I plan my travel to get there by surface transport, usually driving. Emirates can run all the ads they want. I’m not boarding.
If enough people make that choice, the airlines might figure it out and implement more effective controls to keep suicidal individuals out of the cockpit. This will probably need to include paying them much more to attract higher quality candidates and compensate them for the screening annoyance.
When I was a kid, many people refused to fly due to the risk of crashes from unintentional causes. It was a statistical thing. Those causes came to be largely controlled. Suicidal crews (regardless of motive) are apparently a rising risk factor, and one that the traveling public will react to.
I expect to see the concept of remotely piloting mooted (with on-board crew subordinate to the remote). Then the hacking risks arises. Get out the popcorn.
