Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk thinks every car on the road today and many more in the future will eventually be outlawed.
The reason? They require humans to drive.
In the distant future, [legislators] may outlaw driven cars because theyre too dangerous, Musk told NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang at companys annual developers conference Tuesday. You cant have a person driving a two-ton death machine.

what his is really saying is only MY cars will be allowed.
Cars that will be advertising and points of sale for selling personal data about users.
Musk is trying to monetize your driving habits with you paying the bill.
I do have more trust in Musk and Ford than the government.
I remember the Blue Screens of Death from times past. My Windows 8 machine has never crashed and I am a heavy user. Regardless, automotive grade software is in a whole other league when it comes to stability requirements.
“Hackers would have a field day with traffic. People are concerned about the power grid so lets add cars to it. An EMP or solar flare would completely stop the nation.”
Today's cars already have dozens of computers in them. If we got hit with an EMP, we would all be SOL anyway. Also, remember that news story about people getting hurt when hackers had a field day disabling the brakes in their cars? Yea, neither do I.
“How would people that can't set the clock on a VCR tell a car where to go?”
Voice commands. Voice recognition is a rapidly developing field and it will not be long before it can understand you better than your spouse can (which may or may not be saying much depending on your lot in life). You can give it an address, an intersection of two roads, and commonly used places like "home", "work", "grocery store", etc. Also, there will be feedback so that after you tell it where to go, it maps the route on a display and you can verify that it got it correct.
I have enough spare parts to keep my older stuff going. I have a wood gas generator half built so I will not need gasoline. I could start a high priced Uber system.
I have maintained computer fire alarm systems, building control systems, 3 MW power systems, Computer controlled generators... Unanticipated events are the killers.
Half built??? HALF BUILT??!?? How could you be so careless!? You could get hit with an EMP tomorrow!!!
I live in a treehouse in the woods and subsist on a diet of nuts and berries so that I won't be dependent on any technology when the Russians EMP-nuke our entire country!
It is safer and more secure than any city I know.
Amish (no, the real ones) have this solved.
Horse knows how to get home.
No EMP problems.
Minor EPA issues, but balanced by carbon output recycling.
Simply put I think we have a pretty decent analogy and it’s autopilot on airplanes. It’s not a case of either planes flying themselves or people flying them - it’s a case of having both capabilities with a strong presumption of a human being able to override the machine whenever it’s prudent to do so.
Not only do we have this airplane analogy - this is also the way that self driving cars work today - with a human tasked with taking over should the need arise.
This is not hard to think about. Over time the confidence in the systems will increase and the infrastructure and the culture will evolve to make it easier and more “normal”. I don’t however, foresee, a family of four sleeping their way across Colorado and Nebraska while the car drives itself.
You don’t (or shouldn’t) do that in a plane today and I don’t think you’ll be doing it in a car tomorrow.
