Black students at UC Berkeley often feel isolated and even oppressed, says a campus group that wants the nation’s premier public university to step up recruitment of African American students and improve support for them.
So the Black Student Union hammered out 10 demands, delivered them to the chancellor, and set a deadline to meet them.
The demands include renaming a building after Assata Shakur, a former Black Panther and the first woman on the FBI’s list of Most Wanted Terrorists.
To the students, Shakur is no terrorist. She’s a victim and ally who gives voice to their pain.
The students call Shakur “an icon of resistance within oppressed communities (who) represents Black resilience in the face of unadulterated state-sanctioned violence.”
Cori McGowens told The Chronicle that “trying to excel academically is immensely difficult while coping with the issue of antiblackness on campus.”

You know my dad told me growing up that yeah this nation had a past but I was lucky to grow up in a nation like the US for a lot of people come and die trying to get here, this coming from a man that endured what these people are complaining about, and he did endure it for I heard some of the stories when I was young. What I am trying to say is that looking and living in the past while not bettering yourself is not the way to live life, what happened back then cant be taken back and yeah life was hard back then if you were not WASP male in parts of the nation, but what is done is done, and I have a choice I can live with my head up my ass living in the past, blaming some white man, or live for tomorrow and use the opportunity this nation has to offer, I choose the 2nd option.
Okay I agree with them, they need to fix their hostile climate, the Black students that is. The group that is always blamed for racism, Whites. The group that are actually the worst racists, Non Whites!

I remember reading an article years ago discussing the difference between Black and black.
The short version of the story is that 'black' means one of the negro race, and 'Black' is more of a cultural adjective.
