Is this the same Antarctica where the ice is growing, or the other one?

Amazing how the world has looked past the fact that hysterical nonsense like this helped kill off millions of people when we banned DDT. They pulled the same crap back then because of supposed thinning of bird egg shells.

Good. Maybe it can flood out New York, Boston, San Francisco, Lof Angeles and Chicago and make the country cleaner.

The article is appallingly misleading. Prof. Martin Siegert, one of the authors said that “The 3.5 metre rise may take several centuries to complete, but now the process has started it is likely irreversible. This is another example of how human-induced climate change could be triggering major changes with knock-on impacts that will be felt globally.” The key fact of “several centuries” appears to be missing from the Chris “Republican War on Science dude” Mooney’s piece. I wonder why.

Antarctic Sea Ice Reaches New Record Maximum - October 7, 2014

Seems they can't make up their minds about this.

Thank you for referencing that article EagleUSA. Please bear in mind that the following critique is directed at the article and not at you.

The article fails to note the likely influence of oceanic volcanic activity.

The average temperature in Antarctica is around -30 degrees Fahrenheit, what kind of ice is it that melts at 60 degrees BELOW freezing?

Let me see. The ice is being melted by “warm sea water” circulating under it. Which implies that this is ice that is floating on liquid, and which volume ALREADY contributes all that it ever will to the depth of the sea. The ONLY ice that will contribute to “sea level rise” is ice that is CURRENTLY ON LAND.

See reference to some old Greek guy and his bathtub.

Who remembers their grade school science? melting ice does not raise the water level. It is the presence of ice that displaces the water.
And last year cameras showed more ice than anyone knew was there.

Ok the sea levels have been rising for what...20-30 years now? At the rate that keeps being mentioned the inlet close to me would be flooding over the side walls. It isn’t. High and low tide are just about where I remember them for my 45 years of existence so far. Even the jetty rocks look the same as they always have.

Not buying the melting ice=rising seas thing one bit.

I believe the following two elementary observations are undisputed facts:

1. When ice melts, its volume contracts. (middle school grade physics)

2. The amount of ice below sea level is vastly greater than the amount above.

Therefore, .... draw your own conclusions.

It is summer in Antarctica. Things melt in the summer.

If the ice did not melt the river of brine that emanates from that continent would not be impelled to make it's way into the rivers of the ocean keeping the earth cooled.

In other words, without some melting we would easily turn into Mars.

Geesh.

Someone should ask Congressman Hank Johnson if all that ice melt rushing from the Southern Hemisphere into the Northern Hemisphere will cause the Earth to flip over!

If you take any natural fluctuation and extrapolate it linearly for the next 20 year, yes it would probably be bad.
But it will not continue in the same direction forever, it will turn around and return to average again and again, as it has for millennia.

when the bottom of the world loses vast amounts of ice, those of us living closer to its top get more sea level rise than the rest of the planet

Really curious how that works. More curious if the guy said it with a straight face.
