Crimea kicked off celebrations that will see fireworks and concerts on Monday to mark a year since a controversial vote to join Russia that the West blasted as an illegal takeover.
The annexation of Ukraine's Black Sea peninsula however won President Vladimir Putin huge acclaim at home and Moscow is pulling out all the stops to mark the first anniversary of the hastily-arranged referendum in which nearly 97 percent of Crimeans voted to leave Ukraine and become part of Russia.
The red, white and blue Russian flag fluttered throughout the peninsula, and in the port city of Sevastopol a column of cars roared its way through central squares and memorial sites as Crimeans celebrated last year's vote, which was followed two days later by Putin signing the official treaty incorporating Crimea into Russia.

Everyone who doesn't have a visceral fear of Putin is a homosexual. We should make war in the geographically and culturally linked Ukraine to Russia. We need to prop up all the debt George Soros bought in Ukraine. Sign my sons up.
As Stalin once called them, "useful idiots".
I can't be the only one here wondering; how does a group of people subscribed to Freerepublic get away with posting pro-totalitarian propaganda on this website? It is one thing to post a story on pro-russian propaganda and call it out, but the Freepers posting this stuff actually believe it.
Spoken like a good KGB henchman, or your typical purse-swinging isolationist. First, make straw-man arguments, sprinkle a heavy dose of hyperbole and lies, while propping up the new soviet empire.
It's time to reconsider your views on liberty and freedom.
LOL Get bent, pal. Send your children over. Prop up the oligarchs.
Russia is a real oligarchy, so its part of their propaganda from the Kremlin to label Ukraine that way
Are you proud to spew liberal talking points.
Those are John Kerry words. Nobody "sends their children" to war, only left wing anti-war, isolationists kooks speak this way.
In the twisted mind of the isolationists/putin progagandist/purse-swinging liberal, to be opposed to the new Soviet empire is "sending your children" overseas and other stupid excuses.
The Ukrainians do not desire territorial expansion, Russia does. Many Ukrainians want to kill Russians. We should give them all the means to do so.
Debating pro-Putin propagandists on Freerepublic is something I thought was not possible but appears to be the case.
Bump
Supporting the political choice of bad democrat presidents always turns out better than supporting Russian strong men conquering your lands.
Countries join NATO for protection from Russian “encroachment”, for instance right now Russia is invading Ukraine, to move their troops right up to NATO’s borders.
Our military is vastly superior to your Russian military.
As far as chess and checkers, your checkers playing Putin, is leading NATO countries to making chess moves of increasing military budgets and hardening their forces, and conservative political forces having the arguments to prove that you guys are still fixated on empire and being a threat to the world.
Is English not your primary language?
Of course it is, and America is my country, and my country’s military is vastly superior to your Russian military, just as my nation is vastly superior to your Russia.
You think American patriots here at this pro-America, conservative site are only interested in money, and are military contractors?
What do you call our anti-American trash that supports Putin and Russia, the true patriots?
Have you been drinking already today?
Why not answer the questions in post 35?
So you don’t really have anything at all to say.
Your trolling posts are the strangest of all of the pro-Russian team.
Considering how you compulsively defend Putin and attack patriots on this forum, he hit the nail on the head when it comes to your fawning, however you try to hide it now.
