Clinton did actually work with Republicans on a balanced budget and welfare reform.The only good thing that Clinton ever did was to read the political tea leaves and realize that Newt Gingrich's Contract with America was a winner. Being a political pragmatist and more concerned about his own political survival than a political philosophy, Clinton was able to grab Newt's ideas, modify them slightly, and then claim credit.
