It could also be that people just don't want anyone to know if they have a firearm or not. I know if a doctor asks me if I have a firearm in my house, I may ask why or say I would rather not answer and if he presses, I would tell him no.

Never equivocate on this question to anyone you don’t know personally. I would not give my doctor, or anyone else in the HC business any reason to question the validity of my answer. When I am asked, I always respond with something on the order of “ now why would anyone want one of THOSE things.” Ditto for the cops in a traffic stop.
