I thought US diplomat passports were purple?That is an error in the article. My red passport is an "Official Passport."
Diplomatic passports have a black cover.

Another interesting tidbit. The photo in my Red Official Passport has me in uniform but wearing ‘Signal Corp Brass.’
When I went overseas the first time, I donned ‘Unassigned Brass.’
