You oughta read a few books about or by Chuck Yeager.

Sure, luck has something to do with a pilot surviving a plane crash, but so do smarts, skill, and cool-headedness. Most aviators I know (and I know a few) are conservatives and dislike Ford's politics but respect any actor who can fly well. So these same aviators probably respect Ford even more than they did before, because Ford proved himself a good pilot. It's the same with John Travolta -- his politics suck, but my conservative aviator pals respect him just the same because not any old lop can fly a jet. Travolta can, and does.

As for Ford, he can also fly helicopters, and that takes brains, skill, and dedication. It speaks quite a lot about Ford's character, in a good way.
