Lawyers for the family of Michael Brown said Thursday they are gearing up for a wrongful-death lawsuit against Ferguson, Missouri, police and Officer Darren Wilson a day after federal prosecutors cleared the ex-cop in the unarmed teenager's fatal shooting.
The suit will be filed "very shortly," lawyer Anthony Gray said at a news conference, and will include evidence that will present a "more clear, more accurate picture about what took place that day." Wilson previously told a grand jury that he feared for his life during the Aug. 9 encounter with 18-year-old Brown on a Ferguson street.
A Department of Justice report released Wednesday said there was not enough evidence to support prosecuting Wilson for federal civil rights offenses against Brown. But outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder said an investigation uncovered a "highly toxic environment" of racism and misconduct within the police force, aimed at the St. Louis suburb's black residents.
Another lawyer for the family, Daryl Parks, said that while the standard for federal charges is more stringent, a civil suit could end up in the family's favor. "We get to set the stage, and we plan to do just that," Parks said.
The teen's parents, Michael Brown Sr. and Lesley McSpadden, declined to speak to reporters, but their lawyer said that the Justice Department's decision Wednesday was difficult for the family to hear.
"For his parents to sit there and hear from DOJ officials was a tough day for them," Parks said, adding, "They don't accept this self-defense theory."
Ferguson police and city officials didn't immediately respond to the Brown family's plans. On Wednesday night, Ferguson Mayor James Knowles said the city has taken steps to correct misconduct on the police force, and has fired one official and suspended two others.
A few weeks ago while returning to St Louis Lambert field I drove down Floirissant St. in Ferguson. Most of those burned and looted stores are still down. Don’t those store owners get to sue as well?
I’d countersue. Seriously. For more than what they are asking.
Um, third time is the charm?
Money grubbing idiots!
BIG TIME!! A Counter Suit against the so called parents...and a suit against the clowns who promoted the WANTED dead or alive posters for starters
What’s harder than being called a Son of a Bitch... knowing you raised one.
Anyone want to make a bet that this lawsuit wouldn’t be filed if it was a loser pays situation?
Wilson lost his job, and didn’t get even severance
Something is unjust about them knuckling down to the likes of Sharpton, Holder and Obama
I agree. Darren Wilson ought to countersue the parents of Michael Brown. Brown’s thuggish behavior and his criminal activity just before the confrontation lead to his own death and the subsequent character bashing of the police officer. Wilson will likely never get his normal life back.
Good idea... who knows, maybe George Soros was paying for those posters to be printed up.... sue the pants off 'em.
Our side needs to fight back against these thugs. It won’t be popular, but it’ll be the right thing to do... for everyone.
Soros money takes a lot of complex and convoluted routes to untold destinations to “support” all manner of foul “projects”
he does have some rather deep pockets..but the moneys pretty well protected unfortunately
They are betting on a settlement. And unfortunately they will get it.
I’ll bet Soros money was involved - and that connections can be found. We are talking DEEP pocket here... Wilson AND the good guys needs to put that name - Soros - on their list.
if I remember correctly the organization that had the placards printed...was soros connected.
